Case Study: ASAT

The Association for Science in Autism Treatment (ASAT) is a not-for-profit organization of parents and professionals committed to improving the education and care of people with autism. In 2007 their site was overhauled to present content in a clear and concise manner to visitors.

Challenge:

ASAT felt that because their site is all about the challenges people with autism face, that they should be considerate of all disabilities and make their site as accessible as possible.

A high contrast version of the site for users with impaired vision

Solution:

The solution was simple for us to implement, because most of the work is done as part of our normal production process. In order to make the site accessible for people with disabilities we made sure that all the code met or exceeded current web standards. This routine step in our production process helps to ensure that visually impaired users can access content using a screen reader with as few inconveniences as possible.

We also added an accessibility menu bar at the top of each page. This feature allows users to adjust the font size for all of the content to make it easier to read. It also provides a high contrast option that makes all elements of the page easier to interpret and distinguish from other parts of the site.

When we launched the site for ASAT we knew that the site was now inclusive for all people with disabilities and that no one was being discriminated in any way.
